Northern Flying Squirrel

What provides for this gliding ability is a fold of skin that extends from the wrists on the forelegs to the ankles on the hind legs. This membrane, called the patagium, resembles a parachute. When landing on the trunk, the animals move rapidly to the other side of the tree to escape predators that might be hunting them.

The animals are characterized by large eyes, prominent ears, and a bushy tail. The tail is flat and serves as a rudder during a “flight.” Despite the name the animals do not really fly; instead they glide from one tree to the other in a very spectacular manner.
