Flying Squirrels are endangered in some US states. Thus, the Northern Flying Squirrel is protected in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The Southern Flying Squirrel is endangered in Nebraska. The Northern Flying Squirrel has been on the endangered species list since 1985. Nowadays, the population is stable in most parts of the country. However, there are some threats that can reduce the number of Flying Squirrels.

Flying Squirrels - Threats
It is acknowledged that Flying Squirrels suffer mainly from the lack of appropriate habitat. Thus, they experience the shortage of deciduous and coniferous forests in some areas. Deforestation leads to the loss of good living sites and food. Cutting of forests results in the reduction of Flying Squirrel's population. Thus, it is necessary to be on the guard for suitable habitats for the species. It is recommended to balance the amount of hickories, oaks, and other trees in the area. Home sites on the bluffs are also undesirable for Flying Squirrels.
Since Flying Squirrels are nocturnal mammals and do not have commercial value, they have not been studied until recently. Data collected usually originates from observation and live trapping of Flying Squirrels. The construction of boxes also allows environmentalists to do research work.
Flying Squirrels - Living in the Wild
It has been established that Flying Squirrels have a few natural predators. They are often the victims of owls, hawks, snakes, raccoons, and other animals. Domestic cats can also hunt Flying Squirrels. However, natural predators are not the major threats for the species. Neither are health problems that affect Flying Squirrels. The species can suffer from internal and external parasites. They are rather annoying to the animal, yet are not considered a limiting factor.
The relationship between the Southern and the Northern Flying Squirrel is a concern. Their home ranges overlap sometimes, which is detrimental for the Northern Flying Squirrel. Its southern counterpart appears rather aggressive and often forces out the Northern Flying Squirrel.
At present, the population of Flying Squirrels is considerable. Research has helped to evaluate the numbers of the species in the wild. If the living conditions are improved or remain the same, Flying Squirrels can undergo a shift from the endangered to the threatened status.
